Why Cats are Better than Dogs
85Felines rule
I remember always having cats around our house as a child. They were either dropped off at the house, or we found them wondering the streets or they found us wondering the streets. We had dogs also but I have to confess my preference for the kitties. I can think of at least, ten reasons why they are better than dogs.
The first reason why they make better pets is because they are very independent. No, they don’t need to be entertained to stick around. They just exist and will allow you to pet them if it pleases them. They don’t get in the way or trip you. Cats are small enough to stay out of the way.
The second reason they are better is because they are literally maintenance –free. That is, if you get them young and train them, they will take care of themselves. You don’t give cats a bath, or trim their hair. Sometimes they need their claws trimmed, to keep them from clawing the furniture, though.
Reason number three is that kitties are very cool; way cooler than pups. They usually have some dignity and don’t slobber all over you. No long drool hanging from their mouths! Yuck!
cats come in many varieties
The fourth reason cats make the best pet is the fact that they can find their own food. Anything that moves, from crickets, frogs, snakes, birds and mice! Which brings me to state another good reason to have one
Reason number five, is because they kill mice ! Its fun watching them stalk their prey. Slowly watching and approaching them, like their cousins the lion stalking a gazelle. The only thing I don't like about the cat stalking their prey is that they will bring it to you as a present.
Cats are entertaining video
They would rather drink out of a rain puddle than from that nice new kitty–decorated water dish that you paid $19.99 for! This is reason number six.
As far as the seventh reason for owning a cat , is due to their ability to entertain when it suits them! I’ve had some make absolute fools of themselves, especially when one would climb into a bag, only to have another one pounce on it! The look on his face was priceless!
The eighth reason they are better than dogs is the fact they they don’t need or want to be walked. Have you ever tried to walk one? Even with all of my experience with them, I could never get them to cooperate with a harness and leash. It’s that independence thing, you know... I usually wound up dragging them.
No, I won't walk them; they can go outside in your neighbor’s flowerbeds, thank you. Just don’t let your neighbor see them.
Yet another reason why cats are better pets brings us to number nine. They DO NOT bark ! Oh I’m so grateful for this one. They may meow when hungry or when they hear another cat outside, but they never bark! There’s nothing worse than a loud, incessantly barking dog!
O.k, the tenth and final reason why cats are better pets, is because they can use a litter box and not have to go outside. Also you can go away for a few days and leave a litter box and some dry food and they can take care of themselves.
So these are the ten main reasons I can think to own a cat instead of a dog. I have nothing against dogs but I definitely prefer cats.
I hope I haven't offended any dog owners. I love all animals and have owned dogs as well. This was all done tongue-in-cheek.
Don’t forget to go the nearest animal shelter to adopt a rescue cat, or dog. . Don’t buy them if you can help it. There are so many strays out there. They need a good home!
I have some links to animal shelters below.

Thanks for this hub. I chuckled few times while reading :)
I quite agree here. I adore cats. they are so easy to look after, all they need is love and they give it back just by being there. :-)
Hahaha it's true! cats bring home their trophy/catch for the day and sad to say they are usually dead mice. I just got a valentine's gift from my cat yesterday morning, a very dead mutilated mice placed near the door to my bedroom.
thank you so much. i have read it a millon times. i am going to do my independent study on cats. this really will help make my point.lol
I am pro cats. :-)
Hi Stacie, I'm impressed. Your 2 year old Hub is still getting attention. Nice. But anyway, I'm a cat and dog person. I do however lean towards cats then dogs, but I still love dogs also. They're all the closest things to heaven I can think of, cause they are truly sinless and innocent.
Anyway, I want to rebuttal that comment in the first reason. About that tripping thing? You should meet my cats, lol I have one that will do it deliberately. I think he thinks it would be funny to see me drop whatever it is in my hands. This cat thinks and you can actually see him working things out in his head, lol.
Now ya got me wanting to write about them, :P
Good Hub Stacie
Yeah, thats true, i really appreciate your column, since i am also a cat lover and how my cat save me...
I happen to be a long-time cat lover who just recently learned to love a dog or two. I read your Hub with interest and with a smile on my face.
Perhaps a follow-up Hub could be why some are cat people and some are dog people...Although I now find a very special place in my heart for dogs, I'd only want a dog that found its own food, pottied in a pan indoors, amused itself, didn't need to be walked, didn't bark, and of course, purred. :) Up and funny.
I loved reading this hub, but I never agree that people are either cat or dog lovers. You can be both. I love cats because they have a more grown up and educated air about them. But what you see as a cat liking you, is really a cat using its primitive instinct the way a dog does. Both only give you affection to get food.
I love dogs because you have to devote time to them. What is the point of having a pet if you don't feed, groom or care for it?
A dog will also look after its family. A cat would not attack an intruder unless it tried to stroke it.
Hi Stacie! Glad to know you also love cat. Great hub!
Hey there Stacie,
I totally agree with you. I love my kitten to bits, she never would hurt a fly! My kitty always cuddles me, so I named her Cuddles. My friend LOVES dogs and has a DISGUISTING, SLOBBERING, UGLY, YUCKY DOG. He bites me almost every day. I hate dogs a lot... Sorry if I'm being harsh lol, anyway, you and cats rock!
You're absolutely right Stacie. We have 5 cats...and yes that's a bit much...although we never planned to have that many as they all adopted us. I completely agree with all of your 10 reasons....I think my favorite is definitely #1 because they truly are independent:) Thanks for the fun post :)
I can't have a cat right now, so I'm trolling the hubs reading about them. LOVE them!
I can identify with your article since I have had the obsession that I am Max Da Cat. Cat's are by far the best at training humans.
voted up and awesome! i'll have to agree with you on this one...most especially because they are easier to take care of and you can leave them for a few days and they'll take care of themselves. :)
Some good points about Cats. Being a dog lover i am a bit pro dog but a cat will often stand up to even the biggest dog and stop it in its track.
A brilliant hub.
I have owned more dogs over the years than cats but I still enjoyed this one.
Take care
Eiddwen.
I loved this hub. And especially the video of nora playing the piano. Wonderful.
I gave in to my children's request for a pet and that's why we now have two cats. I used to look after a friends collie whenever he went away and I always considered myself indifferent to cats. I admired their independence but never believed I could love a cat. How wrong I was.
There are dog people and cat people. I like cat people.
I much prefer cats to dogs. Cats have a grace and dignity and elegance that most dogs will never approach. Now, some dogs can be pretty cool, but for the most part, I will stick with the cats.
My sister would agree with me, also: she and her husband own six cats, have never owned less than four in the twenty years they've been married, and have never considered owning a dog.
I will make a confession, though--my two cents worth isn't worth two cents; I'm allergic to dogs AND cats!
Good hub and a fun read.
I, too, am a cat person. I love dogs, but my preference is for cats. I have to agree with all of your reasons, especially the entertainment value. :D
I agree with ALL of them. I like dogs, but I love cats.
I am more of a small dog person myself and they have 7 out of your ten traits you mention for your cats.I like the loyalty a dog gives. Small dogs are also good at catching rodents (mine have caught 3 hampsters, 7 mice, not to mention cricket, roaches and flies. My larger dog has caught a Mole rat(was not a pet), plus misc unwanted smaller animals and a thief.
My cat history
I do not have a cat anymore because he moved to a rich neighbor.
I do not have cat anymore that kicks cat litter all over the house.
I do not have a cat anymore typing on my keyboard or a tail swinging into my face or mouth.
I do not have cat anymore the sucks holes in my socks or other clothing.
I do not have cat anymore that climbs up in my attic and spray and poop all over my storage of clothing.
I do not have any cat anymore sleeping outside underneath a wheel well.
Dogs are not dumb enough to sleep on top of a tire on a car.(lost 3 cats that way many years ago.)Dog poop and pee does not stink as bad as cat poop and especially their cat spray.
hehe I SOO agree :) I hope you will take a look at my hubs about Paco. He definitely confirms why cats are the better pets!
My sister-inlaw has two great but bashful cats. When I work on her place the cats just sit and stare at me. So I tell her if those two don't straighten up I'm going to make me some slippers. Their furs nice and soft. Sorry bad joke.
I'm a dog guy but I have to admit cats make better slippers.
Cats rule...dogs drool :D LOL...love that line, and yes I prefer cats to dogs
Very cute article.Cat's have always been my favorite also.
I love both cats and dogs (and all animals), but I do have a special place in my heart for the felines. There's nothing better than a happy, snuggly, purring cat. They can be so affectionate. I agree, cats can be trained, people don't give them credit for what they can accomplish. They are less work, no doubt, unless they develop diabetes or kidney failure. Ugh.
I love cats and dogs both, but I will agree I think that cats make better pets. Most people think that cats just sit around and never listen but it's all in how you raise them. A well raised cat will be very affectionate and can be a truly great friend to have.
Great hub, I have to agree with you on most parts. Personally, I love them both very much and wrote my own personal cats vs dogs hub yesterday if you are interested reading it. Tell me what you think, thanks and enjoy!
I love cats, but then I love all animals. I have enjoyed this hub, especially the beautiful pictures of the different cats breeds.
My adult children have 4 cats, 2 dogs and an eclectic parrot and six kids. The cats and dogs are wonderful, Eric the parrot is a recalcitrant and noisy person who eats like a truck driver and struts around threatening or even bashing any dogs or cats that get in his way.
Yes, I love cats.
Why would anyone have a cat in the house for a pet. They are one of the most disgusting animals on earth.
No! Stacie you have it all wrong! A good dog is just as good as a good cat, and I have had both. But my dogs have never killed four of my neighbour's cute baby rabbits in fifteen minutes!
Moses, my abbysinian cat, killed the first one, and I put him in the house, but he came out through the bathroom window and killed another. When I shut him in again he went upstairs and jumped from the top window to get the next. When I shut all the windows at the back of the house he went out through the front and got the last by which time there were none left...
Persistence was his middle name! But none of my dogs have killed other people's pets!
And yes, I did have a lot of explaining to do!
Very good hub!
I also like cats more than dogs. Cats will never, ever attacks a human, I just can't imagine this happen.
I guess cats will bring mice to show the results of their house chores ;) How else would you know a mouse was caught?
And cats are most eco-friendly mouse catchers in the world.
I agree with you that cats are way, way, wayyyyyy easier to take care of. And, frankly, barking dogs piss me off more than just about anything else. I think I've griped about that in at least three of my own hubs, so, I'm way with you on that one.
I enjoyed reading your Hub. I have a best friend cat named Simba. I want to do a Hub on him, and when I do I will link back to yours. Cute photos too.
